smiling tree gives back

Justin & Kathleen, Peace Corps volunteers serving in Niger, Africa

That's us! Before starting Smiling Tree, we served with the Peace Corps in Niger, West Africa from 2008 to 2009. This experience influenced countless aspects of our lives, including our mission to give back to this organization that holds a special place in our hearts. A portion of proceeds from every Smiling Tree item sold is donated to the Peace Corps, where we focus our efforts on educational and environmental projects that benefit children. The following are just two examples of the projects we've recently supported.

Camp GLOW (Zambia, South Africa)

Camp GLOW in Zambia

Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) programs teach leadership and communication skills, the importance of self-confidence, and how to navigate the difficult unique societal and health issues girls and women face. At Camp GLOW, girls learn how to make a difference in their own communities when they return home. All while making lifelong friends who will support and inspire one another for years to come.

Moringa Trees (Madagascar, East Africa)

Moringa Trees | Madagascar

This particular project distributed 4,050 Moringa trees to 87 rural schools, almost all of which were elementary schools. Training was also provided to community leaders in many of the participating towns. They learned about the health benefits of Moringa trees, how to care for the plants, and how to sell the seeds to a local company for a small profit (which will be used to purchase supplies for the schools).
