  • DOMESTIC SHIPPING RATES

    -$2.95 flat-rate standard shipping: all orders $0 - $20.99
    -$5.95 flate-rate shipping: all orders $21.00 - $99.99
    -FREE shipping: all orders $100.00 or more
    - $12.00 - $18.00 RUSH shipping via Priority Mail: available for all orders 

    International shipping costs based on order weight and destination (see below).

    SHIPPING TIMES

    -domestic standard shipping: orders ship within 2-5 business days of purchase
    -domestic RUSH shipping: orders ship within 1-2 business days of purchase
    -international standard shipping: orders ship within 2-5 business days of purchase
    -international RUSH shipping: orders ship within 1-2 business days of purchase

    TRANSIT TIMES + PACKAGE TRACKING
    -Once shipped, domestic standard shipping takes 3-4 days in transit.  Domestic rush shipping takes 2-3 days in transit. (See below for international transit times.)
    -Package tracking is provided free of charge on all domestic orders. (See below for international package tracking options.)

    INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING
    We ship worldwide via two methods: First Class International and Priority International.

    First Class International:
    -our standard shipping method (unless you upgrade to RUSH Priority International))
    -shipping costs based on order weight and destination country (shipping quote available after placing items in your shopping cart; rush options available)
    -package tracking and delivery confirmation is NOT available
    -delivery time: expect 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer depending on location and customs clearance

    Priority International:
    -for RUSH delivery or orders weighing over 4 lbs
    -shipping costs based on order weight and destination country (shipping quote available after placing items in your shopping cart; rush options available)
    -package tracking and delivery confirmation provided by USPS for most (but not all) countries
    -delivery time: expect 6-10 business day delivery (cannot be gauranteed)

    INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMS FEES
    All customs or other import fees will be paid for by the customer.  Smiling Tree cannot be held responsible for any customs fees, other import fees, or delayed processing times.  Please know that fees and processing times vary by country, and we cannot predict the amount you may be charged nor how long a package will take to clear customs.

    SHIPPING ERRORS AND LOST PACKAGES
    Shipping errors and lost packages are rare. Please know Smiling Tree cannot be held responsible for shipping errors beyond our control such as delayed/damaged/lost packages or incorrect addresses provided by the buyer. We package all of our toys very carefully and provide tracking/delivery confirmation on all domestic orders, so shipping errors rarely occur. In the unlikely event that your package is lost in the mail, we will refund you for the cost of the toys (NOT including shipping fees).  For lost packages to be eligible for a refund minus shipping, you must notify us within 90 days of the shipping date.

    SHIPPING INSURANCE
    For high value orders, we strongly recommend you purchase optional shipping insurance (available for both domestic and international orders).  To purchase shipping insurance, please contact us before placing your order.

    GIFT SHIPMENTS
    If your purchasing a gift for someone, we're happy to ship directly to the recipient. Please complete your purchase as you normally would, being sure to enter the lucky recipient's name/shipping address when you check out.  If you want us to include a short handwritten gift note, be sure to include that in the "gift note message" box at checkout. We do not offer gift wrapping, sorry. All receipts are sent electronically to the buyer, so your package will not include any paper receipts or pricing information.

    GREEN PACKAGING MATERIALS
    We ship in recycled, eco-friendly cardboard boxes and padded envelopes. For void fill, we normally use natural brown paper reclaimed from local businesses. We sometimes re-use bubble wrap or air pockets (also reclaimed from local sources). Please recycle or re-use all of these materials after you receive your order!

     

  • WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
    We accept online order payments via credit card (Visa, Discover, Mastercard or American Express).  If you prefer to mail a check or pay by credit card over the phone, please get in touch via our contact form or call 507.822.6100 Monday-Friday 8am-5pm CST to make arrangements.

     

     

    DO YOU CHARGE SALES TAX?
    Minnesota residents pay 6.875% sales tax. Non-Minnesota residents who provide a Minnesota ship-to address also pay sales tax.

  • WHAT TYPES OF MATERIALS DO YOU USE?
    We use the finest in American grown hardwoods, primarily maple, cherry, and walnut.  We source FSC-certified (sustainably harvested) or locally grown woods for all of our teethers, rattles, and ornaments, and whenever it's available for the rest of our hardwood toys.  Some of our décor pieces are crafted from wood vaneer fiberboard.  We use non-toxic wood glue on items requiring assembly, and the finish on our toys is 100% safe and edible.  Our unique oil blend is made from homegrown organic camelina oil and local beeswax.
     
    HOW DO YOU COLOR YOUR WOODS?  WHAT FINISH DO YOU APPLY?
    We never use stains, paints, or dyes. We use American grown hardwoods, and all of the gorgeous colors and grain patterns you see are 100% natural!  We simply coat them with our very own homegrown finish: organic camelina oil (grown on our family's land) and local beeswax.  Our finished is edible, organic, and safe for all ages. All of our teethers come unoiled.

     

     

    DO YOUR WOODEN TOYS SPLINTER?
    No. We use only the finest, non-splintering American hardwoods and individually hand sand every piece so that it's silky smooth.

     

     

    HOW DO I CARE FOR MY SMILING TREE TOYS?
    All of our items come with printed care for instructions. Because we use the finest in American hardwoods, our toys are very durable and require little care.  We do, however, have a few suggestions for keeping your toys in tippity-top shape. (We know you’re busy parents, so don’t worry - it only takes two minutes!)

     

     

    All teethers are non-splintering and come unoiled. Over time, as your little one chomps on them you may find they lose some of their smoothness. Simply use a dry kitchen scrubber pad or fine-grit sandpaper to hand sand and bring them back to life.

     

     

    All of our other toys are finished with our blend of homegrown organic camelina oil and beeswax.  We’ve found this to be the best 100% organic and safe finish for protecting wood and preserving its natural beauty.  If you find your toys lose a bit of their smoothness or sheen, lightly hand sand with fine-grit sandpaper or a dry kitchen scrubber pad and re-finish with a food-grade oil.

    HOW DO I CARE FOR MY SMILING TREE CUTTING BOARD?
    All of our cutting boards come finished with a blend of food-safe mineral oil and local beeswax. Hand wash only, do not submerge in water. To maintain the board's longevity and appearance, use the back for cutting and reserve the front for display. Refinish with mineral oil or another food-grade oil as needed.

  • WHAT'S YOUR RETURN POLICY ON TOYS?

    TOYS: We stand behind all of our items and we believe you’ll love them as much as we do!  If for any reason you aren't satisfied with your purchase, please let us know. You can send it back to us in its original, unused condition within 2 weeks of receiving it and we'll issue you a full refund. Buyer is responsible for return shipping costs. PERSONALIZED ITEMS AND CUSTOM ORDERS ARE NOT RETURNABLE. In the event that a manufacturer's defect is found on any item, we'll take care of everything for you (be it a replacement, refund, or other accommodations).

  • WHAT'S YOUR RETURN POLICY ON HOME DECOR ITEMS? 

    Above all, your COMPLETE SATISFACTION is our number one priority. Please know we will always deliver high-quality, expertly crafted items. And we'll do everything we can to ensure you're happy with your purchase AND your Smiling Tree experience. 

    By purchasing, you agree to the following terms:

    + YOUR ITEM WILL HAVE ITS OWN UNIQUE WOOD COLOR, GRAIN PATTERNS, AND NATURAL STREAKING. THE TEXT AND DESIGNS ENGRAVED ON YOUR ITEM MAY BE SLIGHTLY LIGHTER OR DARKER THAN THE EXAMPLES PICTURED, DEPENDING ON THE INDIVIDUAL PIECE OF WOOD. We maintain extremely high standards and attention to detail when it comes to each of these factors, so rest assured you will receive an excellent product that has passed our careful inspection.  We cannot, however, issue refunds due to any of these naturally occurring variations. We hope you'll appreciate the unique beauty and traits of your items as much as we do!

    + All custom orders and sale items are FINAL. Sorry, no exceptions.

    + For non-personalized items, we carefully consider returns/refunds on a CASE-BY-CASE BASIS. Contact us for questions.

    + We CANNOT be held responsible for items lost, damaged, or delayed in transit.

    + We CANNOT under any circumstances guarantee delivery dates. The best we can do is tell you approximate delivery times, so that you can decide for yourself whether an item will reach you by a certain date.

    WHICH WOOD TYPE IS BEST FOR ME?
    We work with three American grown hardwoods: maple (light blond), cherry (medium reddish) and walnut (dark brown). Learn more about their unique traits so you can choose the one that's best for you:

    + MAPLE (light blond in color) is the hardest, most dense of our hardwoods. This makes it the optimal wood for cutting on. Maple's light color also means that the designs and text engraved on this wood contrast well and are easy to see and read.

    + CHERRY (medium reddish) is one of the most popular woods due to its gorgeous coloring. The designs and text engraved onto cherry also show up well.  It is very common for cherry wood to have a fair amount of natural streaking and dark flecking in the grain. Items made from cherry are often not 100% "clear" but rather have various degrees of darker streaks/flecks throughout the wood.

    + WALNUT (dark brown) is prized for its deep, rich natural color. A wide range of coloring (from light browns to very rich, deep browns) is common in this wood. Generally speaking, the designs and text engraved on walnut items do NOT contrast or show up as well as they do on maple and cherry woods.

    + ALL of our hardwoods are FSC certified, meaning they have been grown and harvested in a sustainable manner, as approved by the Forest Stewardship Council.

    + ALL of our hardwoods are non-splintering and rank very high on the hardness scale; they are ideal for use in the kitchen and as cutting surfaces.

    CARING FOR YOUR CUTTING BOARD
    All of our cutting boards come finished with a blend of food-safe mineral oil and local beeswax. Hand wash only, do not submerge in water.   • DO YOU OFFER GIFT NOTES OR GIFT WRAPPING?
    We DO include gift notes upon request, however we DO NOT offer gift wrapping services. Our toys come ready-to-gift in USA-made cotton bags. These bags are ideal for gifting, storage, and travel. If you like, we can add a handwritten gift note to the bag.  Just let us know what you want it to say in the "gift note message" box when you checkout. 

    DO YOU TAKE CUSTOM ORDERS?
    Sometimes, depending on the specifics of your request. Contact us and we’ll get talking.

    CAN I PURCHASE A GIFT CARD FOR SOMEONE?
    Absolutely! We have Smiling Tree gift cards available in the following dollar amounts: $15, $25, $50, and $100.  Please note that all gift cards are delivered electronically; paper copies are not delivered via mail.

    HOW DO I REDEEM A GIFT CARD?
    Gift cards are easy to redeem.  After you make your purchase, you and the recipient will received details instructions via email on how to redeem your gift card. 

    DO YOU SELL WHOLESALE?
    Yes! We're launching our wholesale program (on a select portion of our product line, primarily our teethers) early summer 2015.  Please contact us to be added to our wholesale email list so you're sure to receive all wholesale-related updates.

    DO YOU OFFER BULK DISCOUNTS ON LARGE ORDERS?
    Yes!  We have a bulk ordering program available for interested buyer's clubs and co-ops.  If you're an individual interested in placing a large order, please contact us to discuss possible discounts.

    DO YOU DONATE ANY OF YOUR PROFITS TO CHARITIES?
    Yes – ‘tis better to give than to receive!  We’re fortunate to be able to support ourselves by doing something we truly love and believe in.  So it only feels right to share our good fortune with others.  As former Peace Corps Volunteers (we served in West Africa), we make a donation to Peace Corps worldwide development projects for every item sold.  You can learn about the most recent project we've donated to here on our blog.

    HOW DO YOU "GO GREEN” AND “SUPPORT LOCAL”?
    -we use locally sourced and FSC certified woods -our packaging materials are eco-friendly (recycled cardboard boxes, re-used packing paper/bubble wrap from local businesses)
    -our toys are finished with our very own homegrown blend of organic oil and beeswax
    -our cotton bags are made in the USA from natural cotton, free of harsh chemicals and pesticides
    -we participate in our local renewable energies program
    -we shop local and independent whenever possible
    -we’re conscious consumers  – waste not, want not!
