I know, I know. We're all still recovering for Christmas (was it really just five days ago??) but New Year's is in just a couple days and you know what that means: resolutions. Of course there are the usual goals: lose weight, eat healthier, save money, travel more, etc. and those are all excellent things to strive to accomplish. For me though, I like to take this time to re-evaluate my efforts to combat pollution and lower our family's carbon footprint. Beyond the things we've done for years (energy efficient home and vehicles, walking as much as possible, eating little to no meat, just to name a few), I wanted to know what else we could do.
This question lead me to MightyNest, which is a company that offers a several ways to green your household. Because of my desire to make this as hands-off as possible, I opted for their popular MightyFix subscription service. This subscription sends you one item a month that helps your family become greener. The changes are small, but their impacts are significant! Here are the first three items I received with my subscription:
These aren't your typical dishcloths. You'd be shocked at how much these little things can absorb! They're made of earth-friendly cellulose and cotton, and unlike synthetic sponges they can be composted once they've lived their life. When it's time to wash them, simply add them to your laundry, throw them in the top rack of your dishwasher, or even zap a damp cloth in the microwave for a few seconds to kill any bacteria. Easy! As a person who appreciates beautiful things, I feel it's important to add that these dishcloths are pretty, too!
As someone who packs her own lunch every day, I LOVE these things. I had been using disposable plastic zipper bags previously, but once these arrived in my mailbox I became hooked. I use the sandwich-size one for -duh- sandwiches and wraps, and sometimes snacks. The snack-sized ones are perfect for cut fruit and veggies or even pretzels and cereal. I loved them so much I ordered a second set for when I pack my daughter's school lunch. The prints are so fun too. Another bonus - they can even be washed in the dishwasher!
These silicone food storage bags are another essential item if you're trying to ditch disposable bags. Unlike the LunchSkins bag above, which have velcro seals, these have an airtight pinch-press seal. Perfect for liquids or other foods you don't want spilling in your lunch bag. Because they are made from silicone, they can go from freezer to microwave to dishwasher without degradation or worrying about leaking dangerous chemicals into your foods. They're easy to clean and come in several colors and prints. Tip: use a dry erase marker to label your foods again and again!
Although the first three items I received were all kitchen-related (which makes sense considering that is where most of household waste originates), they do send items for every room in your home. You can even choose your "fix" if there's something specific you have your eye on, which is how I got the Stasher bags.
Similar to how Smiling Tree Toys started, MightyNest was created by a husband and wife looking to make greener, healthier choices for their family after the birth of their first child. All of the products on MightyNest are free from toxins such as BPA, PVC, phthalates, lead, melamine, formaldehyde, flame retardants, parabens and more. They do all the work for you, so you know the products you are bringing into your home are safe for your family and the environment.
Give it a Try Yourself!
Subscriptions are $10/month, but the nice people at MightyNest are offering our readers the chance to give MightyFix a try for just $3! Use code SMILINGTREE to enjoy 70% off your first month. This is a STEAL considering what you get. Each Fix is at least a 30% discount off retail and comes with instructions and tips to get the most out of each item. You can cancel anytime, or skip a month/pause your subscription if needed. You'll be sent an email before your Fix ships giving you the opportunity to choose your Fix or add items to your monthly package with free shipping. Vegan? They got you covered there too! The perks MightyNest offers are incredible. Not only can you make a small change with a big environmental impact, but you'll save so much money in the long run too. Just one LunchSkin or Stasher bag can replace hundreds of zipper bags, and one Swedish dishcloth can replace several rolls of paper towels.
I hope you enjoy MightyFix as much as I do! What goals are you setting for yourself and your family in 2019?
